We are recruiting: Principal Building Regulation Consultant

Location: Remote or one of Hickton Group’s Regional Offices (This may be an informal hybrid arrangement depending on individual preferences.)

About the role

Qualitas Compliance is a rapidly growing Building Regulations Compliance Consultancy business.

We offer a range of professional services to assist our clients in meeting their statutory Fire Safety and Building Control obligations and reduce design and programme risk.

Our service is tailored to integrate with clients and design teams to develop project proposals through the planning stages to a state of readiness for submission for approval to the Building Control Body and subsequent Fire Authority consultation.

The sectors we typically operate within are as follows:

  • Workplace – new development and fit out (CAT A and B)
  • Residential – Student accommodation, private or BTR apartments, care homes, hotels
  • Education – schools and further education establishments
  • Retail
  • Storage and distribution
  • Defence
  • Custodial

In today’s construction industry, the role of a Building Regulations Consultant has never been more crucial. As a Building Regulation Consultant, you will be an important part of the design team and will need great communication skills, both written and verbal. You will be expected to provide expert advice, assessments and solutions related to the design and construction of a wide variety of buildings to achieve compliance with the Building Regulations.

Our primary role is to provide “Principal Designer” support through the RIBA stages, de-risking the design process prior to the submission of a full design package to the regulatory Building Control Body. Our ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of the regulatory regime, and guidance documents that demonstrate compliance with the Building Regulations. Time management and project management skills are imperative. Working as part of an experienced and dynamic team you will be a key player in helping to market and develop the service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaison with clients and their professional teams around project scope and management of the fee proposal process.
  • Reviewing scheme proposals and providing initial comments and mark-ups with regards to compliance.
  • Meeting with clients and design teams to present and discuss our initial comments.
  • Reviewing and responding to queries in relation to early-stage design development.
  • Providing expert ad-hoc advice on Building Regulations compliance as required.
  • Formal report writing with annotations to clearly demonstrate compliance in order to support the design teams submission to approving authorities.

Qualification and Technical Requirements

  • Professional membership of a Chartered Body – CABE, RICS, or CIOB.
  • Registered Building Inspector to at least level 2F.
  • Proven experience as a Building Control Surveyor or Registered Building Inspector.

Personal Requirements

  • Approachable and reliable in character.
  • Able to work on initiative and without supervision although willing to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Diplomatic but firm in dealings with clients and design teams.
  • Ongoing commitment to learning and CPD.
