General Practitioner in Oncology

BC Cancer– Vernon

Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

The Department of Medical Oncology, based in Kelowna, partners with Medical Oncologists and team members at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, to provide collaborative cancer care to patients from the Vernon and North Okanagan area. We are looking for a General Practitioner in Oncology to join our well established and collegial team.

Our provincial structure is the key to our success, and we work to achieve expert and safe cancer care, closer to home, throughout our regions. As a GPO in Vernon, you will report to the Head of Medical Oncology, BC Cancer-Kelowna for issues related to patient care, research, teaching and standards of care.

The Vernon area boasts spectacular beauty, agricultural abundance, and a wide variety of recreational options, including golf and hiking; skiing and mountain biking at Silver Star Mountain; and renowned Nordic ski trails and biathlon facilities at Sovereign Lake. The Vernon Jubilee hospital staff and North Okanagan medical community are welcoming and collegial. A medical career in this area can provide excellent academic and personal opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be eligible for licensure in British Columbia and have Canadian certification (FRCP, FRCS or CCFP) at the time of appointment. You must also be suitable for appointment to the University of British Columbia. If you have no prior experience as a GPO, BC Cancer will support your training, involving both didactic virtual teaching, and in-clinic patient-related instruction.

We are looking to add a full-time GPO to a core group of 3 part-time GPO physicians and two medical oncologists, with an expectation of two additional medical oncologists joining the team in 2024. There may be an option to consider a part-time position, depending on interest and other commitments.

Successful Candidates Will Have

  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
  • As per the current Public Health Order, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment with PHSA as of October 26, 2021.
