Banking and Finance Lawyer (German speaker preferred) – based in Luxembourg

Overview

The EIB’s Legal Directorate (JU) – EU Operations Department – (OPS‑EU) – Northern Europe Division (NE) – Austria and Germany Unit (AT‑DE) seeks a Banking and Finance Lawyer to support legal matters primarily for projects in Austria and Germany, and secondarily for other Northern European countries.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate legal documentation for lending and financing operations, including bilateral loans, project finance, structured finance, securitisations, and risk‑sharing structures.
  • Provide legal advisory support, conclude contracts, and complete all related formalities.
  • Conduct legal research and study emerging issues and instruments.
  • Manage contacts and negotiations with clients, external counsel, and stakeholders.
  • Prepare terms of reference for external counsel and supervise their work when necessary.
  • Maintain relationships within EIB, its clients, and external advisers, representing EIB externally.
  • Travel may be required for negotiations, signatures, and contract finalisation.

Qualifications

  • University degree in law (Bachelor or higher); a Master level qualification is preferred.
  • Qualified in German or Austrian law is preferred.
  • 5‑15 years of professional experience in bank lending, project finance, or capital markets, preferably with an international law firm or in‑house legal department of a financial institution.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating finance documents in English; experience in German is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of civil and commercial law of a jurisdiction relevant to the Division’s work is an asset.
  • Experience in structured finance and/or project finance/PPP transactions is advantageous.
  • Excellent command of English and/or French (with a good level of the other language); proficiency in German is a distinct advantage.
  • Very good knowledge of standard computer tools.
